AFTER YOU HAVE BOOKED YOUR TEST
You should get an email confirming your theory test date, but it may be sent to spam or junk mail folders. Print out the email to bring to the theory test centre.
ATTENDING THE THEORY TEST
Remember to take along a printed copy of the email confirmation sent to you by DVSA on your test date. On arrival at the testing centre, ensure you take your plastic photo card licence, the paper counterpart of this is no longer required. You should also bring along a suitable form of ID such as a valid passport. If you do not possess a passport, you should apply for a new-type driving licence and take this along with you.

When you do not need a theory test
You do not need to take theory tests before booking a driving test to upgrade from automatic cars to manual cars. From category A1 (small motorcycles) to category A2(medium motorcycles), if you've had the license for at least two years. From category C1 (medium vehicle) to category C (Large Vehicles), unless you got your C-1 entitlement from passing a driving test.
A minibus must tow a trailer. You do NOT need to pass a theory test before booking a minibus.

Knowledge and understanding
Theory tests are made up of two main sections, the multiple choice section and the hazard perception section. Both these sections must be passed before a Theory Test Certificate will be issued.
