The theory test is a compulsory part of getting your licence. It tests your understanding of road signs, traffic lights, speed limits, lane markings, and so on. If you fail it, you will not be able to drive legally.
Arriving at Salford Theory Test Centre
The test centre is located just off junction 12 of the M6 motorway and is easily accessible from Manchester Airport, Manchester Piccadilly station, and the city centre. It's less than 10 minutes' drive from both the airport and city centre.
Pass Rates by Year
The pass rate has increased steadily since 2014, although it remains lower than the national average. In 2016, just under half (48%) of all candidates passed their practical driving test. This compares to a pass rate of 58% nationally.
Booking your theory test
The theory test is a compulsory part of obtaining a licence to drive in the UK. It consists of two parts; one where you sit behind the wheel of a car and another where you take a written test. If you pass both parts, you will receive a provisional licence which allows you to drive on public roads for 12 months.
How to book driving theory test slots
If you want to take a driving theory test, you should book it at least four weeks before your test date. The sooner you book, the better chance you have of getting a slot. There may be some availability on certain dates, but if not, you’ll have to wait until the next available day.
Find a nearby test centre
The cost of taking a driving test varies depending on where you live. In some areas it will be free, while others may charge between £25 and £60. If you want to take your test at a specific location, check if they offer discounts for booking online.
When can I book my theory test?
The best time to book your theory test is at least three months before it’s due. This gives you plenty of time to prepare and practice. If you want to take the exam sooner than this, then you should contact the testing centre directly.
How do you know if you’re ready to book your theory test?
The best way to find out if you’re prepared is to take a practice test. This will give you a better idea of what to expect from the real thing and whether you’ve got enough knowledge to pass.
Preparing for a theory test
The theory test is designed to assess your knowledge of general principles of road traffic law. It consists of 40 multiple choice questions which will take around 45 minutes to complete. Your score will be calculated based on your answers and then converted into a grade from A* to E.
Driving theory test
The theory test is one of the most important tests you will ever take. It gives you the opportunity to practice what you learned during your lessons, so it’s vital that you pay attention to every detail. If you want to pass your test, then you should spend some time studying the topics covered in your coursebook before taking the test.
Documents to bring to the test
The test centre will ask you to provide documents proving your identity and eligibility to drive. These include:
• Your passport
• A valid licence (if applicable)
• Proof of address (such as a utility bill)
• Evidence of insurance (e.g. a certificate from your insurer)
• Evidence of third party cover (e.g. motorbike or car insurance)
Taking the test cars and motorcycle drivers
The test consists of three parts: a written test, a road test, and a practical test. For the written test, you will be given two hours to answer 50 multiple choice questions. There are four types of question: short answer, extended response, essay, and fill in the blank. Short answer questions require you to provide a single sentence answer. Extended responses ask you to write at least 250 words. Essays require you to write a paragraph explaining why you chose one option over another. Fill in the blank questions give you a word and you must choose which word best completes it.
Part one multiple choice
The first part of the exam consists of a series of short essays, each worth 50 marks. There are three sections: general knowledge, science and maths, and language.
Car theory test changes
The new car theory test has been introduced by the Department for Transport (DfT) to ensure drivers are better prepared for the road ahead. It will replace the current knowledge-based test which was first introduced in 1998.
The new test will see candidates sitting a computer based test instead of being tested on paper. They will be given two hours to complete it.
After passing the tests
The theory test is a road safety course designed to teach you how to drive safely and legally. It includes practical lessons and assessments in different scenarios including reversing, overtaking, changing lanes, roundabouts and junctions.
What happens after I pass the test?
If you pass all the theory tests, you will then be able to apply for a licence from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). Your provisional licence will be valid for 12 months. You must complete a minimum of 30 hours of supervised practice before applying for your full licence.
At the end of the test
The examiner will ask you to drive through three sets of cones. If you pass all three tests, you’ll receive a certificate of competence.
