Driving Theory Test Centres in Crawley
The theory test is designed to give you an indication of whether you will pass if you take it again. It doesn't tell you anything about your actual ability to drive safely. If you want to know what you're really like behind the wheel, then you should consider taking a driving course.
Arriving at Crawley Theory Test Centre
The test centre has three lanes and is split into two sections. One section is for learner drivers who have passed their practical test but still require assessment by a qualified examiner. The second section is for those who have completed their practical test and want to take their theory test.
Pass Rates by Year
The pass rate has increased from around 50% in the early 2000s to around 90% today. This increase may reflect better preparation for the test, but it could also be due to changes in the way people take the test. For example, the number of attempts allowed per question has decreased from three to two. Another change was the introduction of a computerised version of the test in 2015.
Preparing for the theory test
The theory test is designed to assess your knowledge of road signs, rules of the road, vehicle controls, and the Highway Code. It consists of three parts – Part 1 (30 minutes), Part 2 (45 minutes) and Part 3 (15 minutes).
Multiple choice questions
The only way to pass this exam is by answering all the questions correctly. If you miss any, you’ll fail.
Hazard perception
The hazard perception test measures your ability to detect hazards around you, including vehicles coming towards you from behind, pedestrians crossing the road, animals running across the road and cyclists approaching from the side. It consists of two parts – a practice session where you will see a series of images of traffic signs, followed by a real-life scenario where you must respond to a set of images of traffic signs.
When booking your DSA theory test in Chesterfield you'll need
To book your theory test, visit the Driving Standards Agency website and follow the instructions on the page. The cost will depend on which driving school you choose, but it's usually around £60 per person.
What do I need to bring to my theory test?
The theory test will require you to sit through three hours of tests covering topics like road signs, traffic lights, speed limits, and so on. You’ll also need to know what to expect if you fail. If you don’t pass, you won’t be able to drive legally again until you retake it.
Book a test online
The most common way to book a test is online. There are many websites where you can search for a local test centre near you, but they will often charge a fee. Some centres offer free tests if you pay upfront, so it’s worth checking out what they offer before booking.
When you do not need a theory test
A theory test is required if you want to drive a car in England, Scotland or Wales. If you live in Northern Ireland, you don't need one. The theory test is designed to check whether you understand road signs, traffic lights and basic rules of the road.
